Mr Bolnan Jannap, a member of the Africa Inventors and Innovators Association (AIIA) has
urged Federal Government to prioritise research to engander development.
Jannap, who made the call on Friday in Abuja, described research as the bedrock of development.
He said nations that gave priority attention to research would evolve better ways of approaching development to engender better quality of life for the citizenry.
He added that “almost all developed countries of the world become so on the wings of research and investigations carried out by their citizens.
“Show me a country that has achieved heights in development and I will show you the strides they have made in the area of science and research,” he said.
“Talk about the Asian tigers, Europe and others, they all developed with the aid of research, so, Nigeria should not continue to pay lip service to it.”
The scientist also urged Federal Government to ensure robust funding for Research and Development (R&D) activities.
“We cannot continue to import goods and expertise, we must research to produce goods and expertise.
“Our universities and research institutes should be funded adequately to generate findings that will create wealth for the people,” he said.
Jannap said independent researchers and inventors were ready to partner government and its agencies toward advancing and consolidating development using the R and D model.
He further said that adequate funding for research would reduce the brain drain of scientists who left the country in search of greener pastures.
“When the country is supportive of research efforts, and research results are used to aid development, our researchers will not seek greener pastures elsewhere,” he said.
AIIA is a group made up of scientists, researchers, and innovators from Africa constantly engaging in research to develop solutions to problems
in the fields of medicine, technology, agriculture and ICT.
