Independence

By Aofiolujuwon Dele-Olukoju

We finally had it
We were finally free
We get to celebrate this great day every year
Yes, we are Nigeria
The most populous black country in the world
We’ve got thirty six states brought alive by the people’s spirit
Our beauty has always been in our diversity
It’s in our people, our culture, our traditions
We’re always so rich in values and morals
We call each other the most beautiful names
Each with their own deep meaning
Bolanle, Ihedioha, Uchechukwu, Kanyinsola, Jummai, Arukeme
We strive, we hustle, we push forth
No matter where we are, we never forget home
It’s the place where all our dreams start
Idanre Hills, the Warm Springs of Ikogosi, the Zuma Rock, the Olumo Rock, the Kainji Lake, the great City Walls in Kano, the Cattle Ranch in Obudu…
These beautiful places of attraction are all here
No need going anywhere when we have so much beauty around us
It’s never been just the oil or the gold or the agricultural resources
It’s always been our spirit
With our people so industrious and so hospitable
Our country has brought so many greats
Wole Soyinka, Nwankwo Kanu, Philip Emegweali, Aliko Dangote
We’ve got our Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo, Fulani, Kanuri, Ibibio, Efik, Tiv, Edo
To this country, I will always pledge to be faithful, loyal and honest
I will serve her with every last strength I’ve got
Defend her unity and uphold her honour and glory
So help me God
But of all the things I’m most proud of
It’s that I get to be part of this amazing journey
I get to be a Nigerian
I’m proud to be one
I always will be

Happy Independence Day, Nigeria!
